Not everything I draw is personal. Some things just catch my eye - like the way light bounces off a glossy black cube of jelly. I first had grass jelly in Taiwan, loved it, and thought, this would be fun to draw. A simple tribute to Taiwan’s food culture. Or so I thought.

But somewhere between layering shadows and perfecting that deep, inky sheen, I found myself wondering: „Will people find this unappetizing? Weird? Too unfamiliar?“ And that thought hit a little too close to home. It took me straight back to school lunch days, when my own Korean food felt like something to shrink away from. Funny how those memories sneak up on you.

Somewhere in the process, this piece became more than just a study of texture and light. It became a quiet reflection on belonging and the flavours that shape identity - themes I deeply care about.
